Letter from Willie Earle Davis (grandson) in 1973 to S. Doreen Evett for compilation of Davis genealogy states that Charles Gilbert Davis II went into Union Army in 1861 @@age 15 as drummer boy under his Uncle Sam Davis. He advanced through the ranks & was a captain at the age of 21 when he left the Army. Known thereafter as Captain Davis, he was a leading citizen of Punta Gorda, FL & served on the city council & as Mayor. Obituary in Warner, NH newspaper (#96, Nancy Sibley files) includes the following information: He was born in Warner on May 12, 1846 to Gilbert & Harriet (Harriman) Davis. During the Civil War he served in the 16th NH regiment & in the First NH cavalry. His first wife Lucy (daughter of John Davis 3rd) died in 1911 & in 1912 he married Mrs. Grace C. Eaton of Warner. He moved to Tennessee and Alabama and finally in 1889 settled in Punta Gorda, Florida. He was a passenger conductor for the railroad for several years & was a very respected businessman. "History of Warner, NH" pg. 488: Charles Davis, Jr. from first sgt. 2 Sept. 1862 to captain Sept. 20 ,1864. Discharged 20 Jan. 1865. 1870 census of Merrimack Co. NH places Charles G. Davis there. |
