"Chuck", lived in Pittsburgh, high on a hill. Marrried to Elizabeth, they adopted one child a boy. Chuck had very bad psoriasis. He lived on Mather Way? " Grandpap worked for US Steel, Homestead Wrokds throughout his adult life. He worked as called during the 1930's. With the advent of World War II, his work hours, like most Americans, increased to six or seven days a week, 12 to 14 hours a day. During the war, Grandpap was an air raid warden. Fortunately, Pittsburgh was never bombed -- but air raid drills wre held periodically. What free time he had was usually spent with the family or at the German-American Krieger Hall. Even with its name, the hall was packed during the war years on weekends. Gread Grandfather and Grandmothe Sartory were living at the club as stewards. My father can recall many eveening sleeping in the apratment inthe club while the family worked as bartenders or waitresses. After the war, Grandpap like all steel workers, was frequendtly n strike as workers refused to go back to pre-war wages and hours. The business a the club began to dwindle and it was eventually sold to a local politician who was later convicted for forcing contractors into giving him cash for favors rendereed. When it did not make it as a plush after hours club, it was sold to the Catholic War Veterans. They couldn't maintain the club and moved. the club, itself, was burned down by two men about ten yers ago. They're both in prison for the arson. Grandfather continued working at US Steel until his retirement in 1969. throughout most of his yers of work, he had been in the refinery making cores. The fine dust from the sand, coupled with very vheavy smoking as a young man had ruined his lungs. He is suffering from a severe case of emphesyma. During htis year alone (1979), he has been hopitalized three times with severe attaks. He is currently restricted to the house, but apears in the best condition in several years.......exceprted from Family History by Amy Louise Bayer" References
