Catharine Eleanor Amor was born on 24th February 1870 at Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. She was the daughter of an engineer draughtsman named Charles Amor and his wife Lucy. Both the 1871 and 1881 censuses find Catharine living with her parents and siblings at Invicta Road in Sheerness (which until 1894 was part of the parish of Minster in Sheppey). By 1891 the family had moved to 83 Alma Road, and Catharine was by this time working as a music teacher.

In 1895 Catharine married a police constable named Joseph Rice, who had been born in Scotland to Irish parents. They married on Sheppey, but then had their first two children at Plumstead in the south-eastern suburbs of London. By 1901 they were living at the police quarters on Harrow Manor Way in the Abbey Wood area of Erith. Their youngest child (and only son) was born in Erith, and they were still at Harrow Manor Way in the 1911 census.

In 1919, after the First World War, Catharine's eldest daughter was married in Plumstead, and Catharine was one of the witnesses to the marriage. Her first grandchild was born the following year.

In 1938 Catharine's husband Joseph died, aged 75. Immediately before his death they were living at 'Yoredale', Glenwood Drive, Minster, back on Sheppey. The following year, at the outbreak of the Second World War, she was living in Ashford, at the opposite end of Kent. She later moved to 51 Rock Avenue in Gillingham. She outlived Joseph by nearly seven years, and died in Chatham on 6th April 1945, aged 75.
