Dear Mr. Owens: (November 15, 2005)

Following are my notes on Caroline:

After reviewing my documentation, I believe the "Wilson" is incorrect as an ancestor for Caroline. I likely made a mistake in reading the following from a typed biography of Maud Snell, daughter of Leonidas.

"Parentage: Paternally - full German blood, tho born in U.S.A, Grandfather and grandmother born and raised in Germany, emigrated around 1825-35, met in New York State, married, had four children. This Grandfather lived to be in the nineties. The grandmother's sir-name was Haas. Her [Maud's] maternal folks arrived in America soon after Revolution from England and named Wilson."

Note from a late newspaper clipping of John Snell.

"At the age of 28 years Mr. Snell was married to Caroline Hass [or Haas] in New York. His wife was a native of Germany also. Seven children were born . . . . and his wife died in 1855."

Record of "Inscriptions from THE GAP CEMETERY, Section 6, Decatur Township, Green County." (This was available at the library in Madison, WI)

Caroline/wife of/John Snell Died Feb 28, 1853, Age 37 years, 7 month days. Alonzo died Oct 3, 1846, Age 4 months Catharina died Oct 24, 1845, Age 2 years, 1 month, 23 days Children of John And C. Snell

We visited The Gap Cemetery, but did not find the grave markers.

From Biography of Maud Elnora [Snell] Chandler and Allen Luther Chandler:

"Maud's father, Leonidas Newton Snell, was the son of John Snell who was born in Welstane, Germany on June 22, 1811. John Snell came to America when he was 25 years of age on a sailing vessel. . . . John Snell's wife, whom he married when he was 28, lived in Cuyler, N. Y. Her name was Caroline Haas. She also was a native of Germany."

The fact that John Snell, the son of John and Caroline, returned to Cuyler seems to indicate that there is a link to Cuyler. We visited Cortland County, NY and found that there were some Snells already living there when our John arrived, but I did not find a record of our John there. Unfortunately, I don't recall spending much time looking for Haas or Hesse records. Based on the above census record, the family was in Pennsylvania by 1842.

This same biography (pg 14) comes to the conclusion that because her grand-parents were from Germany, that "This proved that Maud had one-ha Jewish blood." This note, even ungrounded, would lead me to look into synagogue records in Germany.

Davis Family Tree (on Ancestry Plus)

This tree related to a search for Caroline (Snell) Hefty, daughter of t original John and Caroline.

Father: John Snell b: 24 June 1811 Mother: Caroline Hesse b: 6 June 1815.

The submitter was a Roger E. Davis, rogerdavis@@iolwest.com (April, 2002). I contracted Mr. Davis, but he did not recall where he got the information, but thought it was probably from his wife's grandmother, now deceased.

Another possible clue:

History of Green County, 1877 lists a Jacob Haas, (p 201 & 297) as "one of the largest farmers" and as having served in the 46th regiment from nearby Spring Grove. Cann't find him in the census.
