Research and the following report were done by Suzanne Johnston, volunteer researcher.

The most likely parish for James McGowan’s marriage would have been St. John the Evangelist on the South Side. However, their marriage records before 1877 are no longer in existence. We therefore searched the marriage records of St. James, West End; St. Paul and St. Patrick, both in Pittsburgh; St. Michael Seminary [now St. Stephen], Six Mile Ferry; and St. Peter, Allegheny City. No record was found.

Neither of the parishes that served the 25th ward in Pittsburgh, St. John the Evangelist and Holy Cross, have death records for the 1800s. We were unable to search for that record, but you might want to search for a civil death record from the city of Pittsburgh. Death records were kept from 1870-1905 and are now at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. In an effort to determine what parish the family attended and Bridget’s maiden name, we searched for baptisms of the children and found a number of them at St. John the Evangelist. As you will see in the following records, there remains a question about her exact surname, although Conlon seems to be used most frequently.
