  8. Death of Bluford Hawkins, in Kokomo Democrat Newspaper. Obituary: Bluford Hawkins
    1873.

From the Kokomo Democrat, November 6, 1873: DEATH OF BLUFORD HAWKINS. It becomes our sad duty to chronicle the death of another pioneer. Bluford Hawkins died at his home eleven miles west of this city, of apoplexy, on last Friday, in the 77th year of his age. He had been a resident of this county for twenty-three years, and his name was familiar in almost every household. The farm on which he lived was the result of his industry. He was a kind husband, an indulgent father, and obliging neighbor, and an upright citizen. He was just and scrupulously honest, charitable and kind to the poor and afflicted. His loss will be felt in the county. He was a gentleman of sterling worth and integrity. He has long been identified with the success and prosperity of the county. He was the father of F.C., S.D.,L.W., and J.F. Hawkins of this city. His life was a useful one. His toils are over. He is at rest. One by one the pioneers drop away. But their memory will ever be green, so long as the early history of the county is remembered. Their deeds live after them, monuments to their untiring industry and perserverence. Like the mighty oaks, the grand old monarchs of the forests, they decay and pass away. But the good that they have done will live after them. Bluford Hawkins is no more. Peace to his ashes.
