[edit] About Benjamin Smallhttp://www.capecodhistory.us/genealogy/wellfleet/i2864.htm As a young man, he left this area and moved to Eastham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. They lived there for awhile and then moved to Truro, Massachusetts in 1701 and he served as Selectman there. In 1712, Benjamin purchased 375 acres in Lebanon, Connecticut and the family moved thence. Benjamin died in 1721 after which Rebecca went to Salisbury, Connecticut and died 1753. Benjamin and Rebecca were cousins. "Benjamin Smalley lived at Eastham, Barnstable Co., Mass. for a time. Hannah, Rebecca, and Benjamin were born there. Later he moved to Truro, About 1712 he moved to Lebanon, Conn. and settled near what is Columbia, on the Clark and Dewey purchase. He died about 1721. He did not leave a will. Administration papers mention widow, and all the children. His estate was quite large for the time." (Source: "Josiah Read, of Connecticut And Some of His Descendants," Published abt. 1900-1910, Revised abt. 1940, Page 5) Benjamin was in Eastham until 1701, when he moved to Truro located near the tip of Cape Cod. He was appointed to the committee to "look after all such men as shall come from other parts to fetch sedge from the meadows at Eastern Harbor, and to make them pay 6 shilling a sloop-load, which money shall be improved for the use of the ministry at Pamet (later called Truro)". He was also charged to look after such persons as shall set up whale-houses, or other houses upon any of the common or undivided lands belonging to Pamet, or that shall cut wood or timber upon the same, and to agree with them for the term of their voyages, for not less than 1 shilling per man, or otherwise to warn them to depart off said land. Benjamin was a Selectman of Truro in 1710, and one of the seven males in the Church when it was founded in 1 Nov 1711. On 26 Mar 1711-12 he bought 375 acres of land in Lebanon, CT. He also purchased land in the northern part of the town (now Columbia). He later sold half of this land in Lebanon to his brother Daniel Smalley of Truro, MA on 14 Mar 1712/13. His father-in-law John Snow accompanied him to Lebanon and also bought land, but it is believed he did not move to Lebanon with his family. Benjamin and his neighbors drew up a petition 29 Feb 1714-15 in which they requested they be allowed to establish a new Church. On this petition his name appears as "Benjm Small". On later records his name was spelled "Smalley". After his death, his wife Rebecca removed to Salisbury, CT and resided at the home of her son, Benjamin, where she later remarried. (Sources: 1.
