Biography of Barbara M Pollard Stokes

Barbara met Henry W Stokes in Alabama before the Civil War broke out. They were just a young couple who had just married living in Fayette County, Alabama when the war broke out. Henry, along with four of Barbara's brothers and another brother-in-law rose to the occasion and enlisted together in Captain Kirkland's, Company B, 41st Alabama Volunteers on March 22, 1862. His enlistment shows he was a Corporal of Company B. Henry paid a big price as he fell sick, was furloughed home in August for 45 days, and his file then ends. Later on, Barbara files for a pension and she states he was discharged on 19 day of November 1862.

This pension application is an interesting document. Not only does it state that her husband died the 18 day of July 1866 after the close of the war, but that she had moved to Mississipi and had lived in Mississippi 36 years. Barbara moved to Mississippi, with another sister, Margaret Pollard Brooks, along with her brother, Wiley Pollard and his family, pregnant with three small children. Barbara's father and mother had both passed away, and several of her older brother and sisters had married or passed away. She was said to have the John W Pollard family Bible which she carried to Mississippi. So together, they all moved to Tishomingo County, Mississippi around 1866.

Barbary, as she apparently like to be called, applied for a Widow's Soldier Pension the 27th of August, 1903. It was signed by her brother, W. B. Pollard, who was Justice of the Peace of Prentice County, Mississippi.

Barbara is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, apparently in an unmarked grave, or her marker has been lost. Her death certificate indicates that is where she is buried and it is signed by her brother, Wiley Pollard, who was Justice of the Peace at the time. Barbara's brother, Clovis Stokes and her son William H Stokes are also buried in Mount Pleasant, as are her Parents and other family members.
