Biography of Lattamore M Pollard

Lattamore was born 21 May 1831 in Greenville, South Carolina the sixth child of John W Pollard and Barbara Stone. The family moved to Cherokee County, Alabama before 1840 where they are found on the 1840 and 1850 Cherokee Alabama Census.

Civil War Record

When the civil war broke out, he enlisted with two brothers, Wiley Pollard, and Luallen G Pollard, and two brothers-in-law, John W Brooks, and Henry W Stokes, all serving together. They served in the same C.S.A. unit, Company B, 41st Alabama Infantry, throughout the warS2. Later, a fourth brother, John R Pollard, joined them. Lattamore was wounded in the trenches at Petersburg, Va. Wiley and Lattamore were both captured at Amelia Courthouse and imprisoned as a POW at Point Lookout, MD prison for about two months. They took their Oath of Allegiance together on 16 June 1865 at Point Lookout, Maryland and released. His Oath of Allegiance card states he had a light complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes. He was 5'7-1/2" tall. He resided in Cherokee County, Alabama. He most likely helped his badly injured brother, Wiley, walk home from Virginia to Alabama where the families lived. A family story related to one family member said it took six months for Lattamore to walk home from Virginia to Alabama. When he arrived home, his wife, Jane, did not recognize him (see atrocities and treatment of prisoners at Point Lookout, MD prison). She insisted that he remain outside while she prepared him a bath in a washtub, made him strip off his clothes, and scrub in the bath. Meanwhile, she burned his clothes he had worn home (probably the same clothes he had worn for the six months).
