Information from “Virginia/West Virginia Genealogical Data from Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Records”, Vol. 2, compiled by Patrick G. Wardell, Lt. Col. U.S. Army Ret. :
Hackworth, Austin - born 1746 in Caroline County, Virginia; entered service 1774 in Bedford County, Virginia, where he resided; after Revolutionary War [moved] to Botetourt County, Virginia, thence to Greene County (area later in Tennessee), North Carolina, where he entered service 1789 against Indians; resided there for 33 years, thence to Marion County, Tennessee, where he applied for Pention in 1832 & Pension Application rejected; died abt. 1846-7 leaving children: Austin, Samuel, Ruth & Nickodemus, all living in 1852 when son Nickodemus applied for Pension in Morgan County, Alabama stating soldier's full name was Augustus Austin Hackworth; children's Pension Application rejected. State of Tennessee Marion County: SS
On this 21st day of November 1832 personally appeared in open court before the Justices of the Court of pleas and Quarter Sessions now sitting for said County at the Courthouse in the Town of Jasper, Austin Hackworth a resident in the County and State aforesaid, aged about 86 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated, viz., that on the____ day of June 1774 in the County of Bedford and State of Virginia he was drafted as a private to serve a 3 months tour of duty, and served under Captain Thomas Bluford, first Lieutenant Edward Golman, 2nd Lieutenant Thomas Doolin and Ensign Jonathan Conduff, against the Shawnee Indians: That he was marched under said officers from Bedford County to Roanoke in Botetourt County, Virginia, where they joined the main Army, commanded by General Lewis, Colonels Fields and Lewis (that he has forgotten the name of the other field officers belonging to said Army) that he was marched with the Army from there to the levels of Greenbrier Virginia where they were reinforced by Colonel Christie's [William Christian's] Regiment and there remained about six weeks, and was again marched to the mouth of Kanhaway River [Kanawha River], at which place they had been encamped about two weeks when on the 10th of October 1774 they were attacked by and had a severe engagement with the Shawnee Indians, in which Battle this applicant fought – that he, with the Army remained there about two weeks, after the Battle had been fought having served in said troops as a volunteer in the Company in which he started, about one month after the term for which he was drafted had expired, and then returned home and was discharged (as well as he recollects) by Lieutenant Doolin, his Captain having been killed in Battle, which discharge he has lost. – That this applicant afterwards removed from the State of Virginia to Greene County North Carolina (now Tennessee) where in the month of August 1789, as well as he recollects he was again drafted to serve a 3 months tour of duty in the company commanded by Captain James Moore and Ensign Samuel Hall (the name of the Lieutenant he has forgotten) – that he was marched in the Company under Captain Moore from Greene County to Campbell's Station on Holston River, where they joined the Regiment commanded by Colonel Joseph Martin and Major John Crawford that the applicant was marched with the Regiment from there across Holston River to Tellico Plains and to the Lookout Mountain in the Cherokee Nation where they had an engagement with the Indians, in which the applicant fought and from there shortly returned home, and was discharged by Captain Moore, having served the term for which he was drafted.
That during this last service he was not attached to any troops except Colonel Martin's Regiment nor was he during other tour of service, with any Regular troops. This applicant states that he has lost his discharges, that he has no documentary evidence, and that he knows of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his service. – That he was born in Caroline County Virginia in the year 1746 (the month he does not recollect). That he had a Record of his age, but it has been destroyed he knows not how. That he was living in the County of Bedford Virginia when drafted to serve the first, and in Greene County (now Tennessee) when drafted to serve the last tour of duty. That since Bedford County Virginia he removed to Botetourt County Virginia where he lived about six years, from there he removed to Greene County (now Tennessee) where he lived but a few months: from there he removed to Buncombe County North Carolina where he lived one year: from there he removed to Greene County (North Carolina now Tennessee) again where he lived one year from there he removed to Knox (now Anderson) County, Tennessee where he lived about thirty-three years and from there he removed to Marion County Tennessee, where he now lives. That he was drafted to serve each tour of duty, and was never a substitute. That he never served with any regular troops and consequently cannot refer to the names of any Regular officers, nor can he recollect the names of any of the militia officers with whom he served except such as have been already named. That he was Regularly discharged from each tour of duty from the first by Lieutenant Doolin (as well as he can remember) in the month of November 1774 and from the 2
nd by Captain James Moore, in the month of November 1789, and that his discharges are lost or so mislaid that he cannot find them. – This applicant states that he is acquainted with the following Gentleman in his neighborhood some of whom can testify as to his character for veracity and good conduct: that is to say, Amos Griffith, Squire Hendrix, Luke Hendrix and Isaac Hicks Esquires, Major Henry Tatum, Solomon Hargis and Reverend Michael Burkhalter.
He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State.

[p 6: On October 24, 1852 in Morgan County Alabama, Nickademus Hackworth [Nicodemus Hackworth], 73, filed an affidavit in which he states he is the son of Augustus Austin Hackworth; that his father served in the revolutionary war from the state of Virginia about the year 1779 or 1780; that his father died about the year 1846 or 7 never having received a pension for his service in the revolutionary war; that his father died leaving four children to wit Austin Hackworth, Samuel Hackworth, Ruth Hackworth and affiant Nicodemus Hackworth all of whom are now alive and of full age]
