A Report of the Record Commissioners of Boston, Massachusetts 1630 - 1699 ... Arthur of Arthur & Joane Scovell born June 24 [1663].

The northern and eastern parts of the township were not settled in his time. He was taxed (assessed) in Lyme under Andros on Aug. 27, 1688, for 1 person, 1 horse, 25,00,00 pounds. This was probably Arthur Scovell, Jr., less probably Arthur, Senior. The tax was one penny on the pound, or 2 shillings, 1 penny. At this time, there were seventy householders taxed, a population of perhaps three hundred and fifty, in a territory some twelve miles or more. Their homes were in the southwest corner and along the shore of the sound, and probably along the Connecticut River. The sources of their wealth were the forests, the farms and the fisheries. Game was abundant, fish and lumber may have been exported. Their constable was Thomas Lee, there were three selectmen, a meting house and a minister, and probably a schoolhouse. The roads were all rough and poor. Some small vessels were owned and transportation by water was easier than by land.
