- ↑ Some websites (e.g., [5]) use the birth date 27 Apr 1863, which agrees with the 1900 census, but whose basis is unknown. Since most of these websites show incomplete knowledge of Annie's children, it is assumed the research is superficial, and of no credibility.
The parish register gives: Jacobus Strassel b. 27 Jul 1856 Nicholaum Strassel b. 9 Jun 1859 Maria Theresia Strassel b. 24 Aug 1863 Anna Theresia Joanna Strassel b. 7 Apr 1865 Rosam Theresiam Strassel b. 23 Oct 1869, d. 27 Jan 1872
The 1860 census (line 28) shows Jacob and a daughter named Dorothy b. 1858-1859 (conflicts with Nicholas below).
The 1870 census (line 29 shows Nicolaus b. 1859, Anna b. 1862, Joseph, b. 1867, and Therese b. 1869.
There are three births in Newark where neither the child nor parents given name is present, only surname Strassel. One, in 1867, may well be Joseph. One 10 Dec 1860 and one 27 Jun 1870 don't seem to be good fits. But it is impossible to reconcile the census records with the parish registers, even though one would think the data is soon enough after birth that there is less chance of error.
The death certificate gives her name as Annie M. This raises the speculative possibility that the older sister's name might have actually been Anna Maria Theresia Strassel, but the older birthdate, while in the same year as the census, is in August, not April, so that still does not provide a satisfactory solution. Unless better evidence can be produced, it seems the only thing to do is follow the parish registers.
