Annie Edwards was baptised on 1st December 1878 at Pagham in Sussex, daughter of a dressmaker named Fanny Edwards, formerly Grant, and her husband William Edwards, a traction engine driver. Annie was the sixth of their ten children. When Annie was born both her grandmothers were still alive and living nearby. Her maternal grandmother was buried just three months after Annie's baptism. The 1881 census finds Annie living with her parents and siblings at Pagham.

By 1891, when Annie was twelve, she had left home and was working as a domestic servant for a butcher called James Dean in the nearby town of Bognor. Annie stayed in domestic service for several years. By 1901 she was working as a cook at Hampstead in London. Later that year she married a greengrocer named James Briggs.

Annie and James had a son later in 1901. He was followed by another son in 1902. Back in Sussex, Annie's paternal grandmother died in 1903. In 1904 Annie and James's eldest son died when only two years old. They went on to have three daughters in 1905, 1911 and 1912. The family lived at 9 Lithos Road in Hampstead for several years; it is the address quoted on their eldest son's baptism in 1901 and they were still there at the time of the 1911 census. On census night one of their daughters was staying with Annie's parents down in Sussex.

Some time around 1914 the family left 9 Lithos Road and moved to 100 Fortune Green Road where they lived above the greengrocer's shop where they worked. The 1914 electoral roll lists James as qualified to vote at 100 Fortune Green Road, but living at both 9 Lithos Road and 100 Fortune Green Road.

Annie died in 1923, aged 44. James only survived her by a year, dying on 8th April 1924. He was said to be 46 when he died. He left a will and an estate of £341 4s. 9d. which was administered by his daughter. James's youngest daughter was only 11 years old when James died. As that daughter was the beneficiary of the will of Annie's sister Theresa's husband it seems reasonably likely that after James's death that daughter was looked after by her childless uncle and aunt down in Sussex. Annie's parents both survived her and James.

This baptism has been linked to the Annie Edwards who married James Briggs on the basis that it is in the right parish and at the right time to match the age and place of birth quoted on the census after Annie and James married, and Annie and James's daughter Ivy appears in the 1911 census with Annie's parents William and Fanny in Sussex.

    d. Annie BRIGGS, June Quarter 1923, Hampstead Registration District, Volume 1a, page 633, aged 44 [1878/9]

This death has been linked to the Annie Briggs wife of James on the basis that it is the right age and in the district where she had been living, plus Annie is listed at 100 Fortune Green Road in all the electoral rolls from 1919 to 1922 alongside James, but is not listed there with him in the 1923 and 1924 electoral rolls.
