Catharine was baptized by Rev. John Filbert in New Holland, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Catharine's sister, Elizabeth, married Abraham's brother, Jacob. A family story passed through the years claims Abraham was a difficult person to get along with. When he was mad at his brother, who lived on an adjoining farm, he forbid Catharine to speak to her sister. The two women would go out at the same time in the evening to call the cows so they could hear each other's voices.

Around 1870 Catharine and Abraham moved to Garnett, Kansas. Thirteen children were born to them and only four of their children lived to adulthood. The Lancaster Eagle Newspaper listed their marriage date as 23 Apr 1833.
