Facts and Events
John Dickson was born about 1791 in Poplar, London. He married Ann (surname unknown) about 1814-1815. She was born about 1794 in Poplar. They had the following children: 1. Thomas Dickson, born about 1816 in Poplar. (Although the baptism record has not yet been found for Thomas, he was living with the family on the 1841 and 1851 censuses and his marriage record says his father was a John Dickson, labourer). DNA test results have also shown that a descendant of Thomas and a descendant of Henry are related. 2. William Henry Dickson, born 18 June 1819 in Poplar and baptised 17 June 1821 at St. Dunstan and All Saints Church. Ann was about 22 when her first child was born and about 41 when her last child was born. The baptism records list John's occupation as "mariner". In 1841 the whole family was living at Robinhood Lane in Poplar and John was still listed as a mariner. Ann was a witness to her son William's marriage in 1845 and daughter Ann's marriage in 1851. In the 1851 census John and Ann are still living at 12 Robinhood Lane, with their children Ann, Edward and George, and grandson Robert Aldous, whose mother Sarah Dickson died in 1847. John's occupation was listed as labourer. John was working as a dock labourer when he died of stomach cancer on 2 March 1861. He died at 10 Orchard House Place, with their son William Dickson in attendance, and was buried in All Saints, Poplar Cemetery. In the 1861 census Ann was living at 10 Orchard House Place with her grandson Robert Aldous (her relation to the head of the family, Robert McGregor, is listed as "mother", however as Robert Aldous is listed on the line above her this is referring to Ann being Robert Aldous' "mother".) A death record has not yet been found for Ann.
[edit] Research notes:Some people also include a John Henry Dickson b. abt 1818, baptised 1833 at St. Margaret's, Westminster, in the list of children. This is most likely incorrect as the baptism record for this child shows the mother is named Mary, not Ann who he was married to at the time, and the father is listed in John Henry's marriage and baptism records as being a navy surgeon, while on the other children's records he's listed as a mariner. It also states they were living at Marylebone in 1833 which in not corroborated in the John & Ann Dickson family. Some of John and Ann's descendants currently live in Australia and New Zealand.
