Ann Hopkins’ origins have yet to be established. As an adult she claimed to have been born around 1781 at Stanway in Gloucestershire. Ann’s first confirmed sighting is on 19th June 1815, when she was married at Bretforton in Worcestershire to William Worvell. William was a widower, with two young children from his first marriage who became Ann’s stepchildren.
By 1816 Ann and William had settled back in Stanway, having three daughters baptised there between 1816 and 1822. William was described as a labourer and “under gardener” on their daughters’ baptisms. The most likely place in the area big enough to employ not just gardeners but under gardeners was Stanway House.
Ann’s first known grandchild was born in 1839.
The 1841 and 1851 censuses both find Ann, William and one of their daughters living in the Church Stanway area of Stanway. In 1841 William was described as an agricultural labourer, whilst in 1851 he was called a gardener’s labourer.
William died in 1858, aged 82.
The 1861 census finds Ann living alone in Stanway, supporting herself by working as a nurse. Ann died in 1866, when she was said to be 85 years old. She was buried at Stanway on 13th August 1866.
