Facts and Events
Ann and her brother were orphaned in 1800 after the death of her mother. It is unclear who looked after her prior to her marriage. Ann is stated as blind from birth in the 1861 census. Ann married James Smith, a currier, at Kempston 7 Nov 1810. They had moved to Gwyn Street, Bedford by 1841 where she continued to live until her death in November 1861 named in a Deed Poll of 13 Feb 1838 as one of Mary Mardlin's (her late mother) next of kin. She and her husband are described as of Eversholt. In 1841 their 4 youngest children were living with them, with William a currier like his father. In 1851 Ann was a widow and proprietor of houses. Living with her were her unmarried son William, a currier, her daughter Elizabeth and her grandaughter Ann Smith Berwick In April 1861 at 56 Gwyn Street Ann was described as a retired grocer and Elisabeth her housekeeper. Ann died on 13 November 1861 with probate on her will granted on 27 May 1862 to her (eldest) son Samuel, a currier of Eversholt. Her effects were under £100. |
