Ann Ainscough was born in Blackrod around 1869 and was the daughter of Ralph Ainscough (b.1841) and Ellen Booth. In 1871 she was aged 2 and living at 13 Little Scotland in Blackrod. In 1881, she was aged 12, working as a cotton operative and living at 434 Top Toll Bar in Westhoughton. In 1891, she was aged 22, working as a cotton weaver and living with her parents at 256 Chorley Road, Westhoughton. In 1891, Ann had a 1 year old daughter called Sarah by a man named Holt and was a single parent. In 1901, aged 32, she was still living with Ralph and Ellen, at 306 Manchester Road, Westhoughton, and had either married Holt or was styling herself Ann Holt. There was no mention of her husband at the Manchester Road address; however, he may have been the same James Holt who was seriously injured in the accident that killed Samuel Winward.
