ANDERSON BENSON
A VETERAN CITIZEN REMOVED BY DEATH
In the death of Anderson Benson, Madison loses one of her oldest citizens, he having been a resident of this city for fifty years and of Jefferson County for more than sixty years. He was born in Greenbrier County, Va., February 4, 1814, and lived there until grown. We have often heard him tell of the wonderful Natural Bridge there, and also of the beautiful display of falling stars which he witnessed there among the mountain valley in 1833. When little more than twenty years old he came to this county, where he met Miss Jean Ayers, to whom he was united in marriage, by the late Rev. Henry Little, they being the first couple married in Indiana by Mr. Little.
Ten children were born to this marriage, two of whom died in infancy; two others, James Benson, of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Julia Brydon, having died in recent years. Mr. Benson lost his wife sixteen years ago last May. The remaining children are William Benson, of Louisville, Mrs. Mary A. Brydon, of Texas, Mr. JW. Bishop, Mrs. John King, Mrs. W. T. Ranne and Mr. R. F. Benson, of this city. In his younger days Mr. Benson following steamboating, being a pilot, and no one knew the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers better than he from Cincinnati to New Orleans. At one time he was a pilot on the Mollie Gratz, a boat well known here years ago. Many a cargo has he taken to New Orleans in flat boats, and old men of today can tell of the trips they have taken with him when they were only in their twenties.
Mr. Benson suffered a stroke of paralysis about four years ago, and has been feeble since, but in the last two months, he ahs been weakening rapidly. Monday the second stroke came, rendering him speechless, and apparently unconscious, from which state he never rallied, and yesterday at 1:30 P.M. the final summons came, and he quietly, peacefully and calmly sank to rest. The allotted time of man is said to be three score and ten, but he nearly reached four score and ten, being in his 86th year. In politics he was an ardent Republican; religiously he leaned towards the Methodists, though not a member of any church.
The funeral will occur at 8:30 tomorrow morning from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. John King, on the Canaan road. The interment will be in Springdale Cemetery.
The following gentlemen have been chosen to serve as pall-bearers; Thomas E. Ennis, Jacob Gaumer, William P. Gosnell, Samuel Vandervoort, Joseph Douglas and Ransdel King.
