Graduated from Dartmouth College in 1811 with the highest honors of his class. Entered the law office of Hon. William M. Richardson, at that time, postmaster of the town. In 1814 he left Groton and becamse a private tutor to Henry Clay's children in Kentucky. He was editor of the Argus newspaper of Frankfort, KY, then auditor of the U.S. Treasury, then Postmaster-General under Presidents Jackson and Van Buren. He built a large home east of Washington, D.C., known as Kendall Green and spent the later years of his life in works of charity and deeds of beneficence (founder of Deaf and Dumb Asylum in Washington, trustee of Columbian College, etc.) He d. at his home 12 Nov 1869.
