HORSHAM ...Frederick Easton was brought up on remand, charged with having, on the 24th October, at Star-row, Horsham, stolen an overcoat, value 10s. 6d., the property of William Chapman, who stated that he lived in Star-row, and that on the 24th ult. he was at the Royal Oak in the afternoon, in the company of a man named Sullivan, with whom he had a quarrel. They afterwards went outside to first, and he (prosecutor) pulled off his coat, and when he went to look for it after the fight was over, it was gone. - James Sadler said he was in the employ of Messrs. King and Son, brewers, Horsham, and on the day in question, whilst at the Royal Oak, he saw two men fighting. Whilst they were about it he saw the prisoner take the coat off some palings, and go off with it. A man named Marvell was with him at the time, and they went away together. The prisoner returned shortly without the coat. - Robert Payne, dealer in second-hand clothers, Horsham, said that on Monary, the 24th, some man whom he did not know brought the coat produced to him for sale, and said he had just come from Brighton. He gave him 2s. 6d. for it. - Ambrose Godsmark stated that he kept the Tanners' Arms, Horsham. On the evening of the 24th, prisoner and another man named Marvell slept there, and on the following morning they left. - Prisoner was sentenced to three weeks' hard labour.
