James Godsmark was baptised on 9th July 1848 at Crawley in Sussex, son of Elizabeth Godsmark, formerly Hart, and her husband Richard Godsmark, an agricultural labourer. James appears in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses living with his parents and siblings in Crawley. By 1871 he was living in London with his sister Harriet and her husband.
On 13th August 1874, aged 26, James married a Martha Wickenden at Bermondsey. They had one daughter, Martha Louise, born the following year. The 1881 census finds them living in Rotherhithe, and working as a railway carman. By 1891 they had moved to 71 Naylor Road in Peckham, in the parish of Camberwell.
In 1898, James's daughter Martha Louise was married to a clerk named James Maple. The 1901 census finds James and his wife Martha still living at 71 Naylor Road.
James died on 6th February 1910, aged 61. Martha outlived him by nearly fourteen years.
