"AMASA SHUMWAY5 (Levi4, Oliver3, Peter2, Peter1), b. Mar. 1, 1756; d. Aug. 19, 1830; his name appears with others upon the pension roll in Belchertown, which identifies him with the Army of the Revolution;...
it is said he was at the battle of Bennington, but arrived about the time of the surrender of Burgoyne's force; at the close of the war, he removed to Whitingham, Vt., while that locality was a wilderness; his brother Levi accompanied him, and together, they cleared the land for a settlement, and afterwards became thrifty farmers; he was also quite a public spirited citizen in his day...
He served as Treasurer of Whitingham, also as Constable several terms; he was born in Oxford, and as early as 1775, enlisted in the army from Belchertown; but no records of his family appear at either place excepting his birth; m. (1st) Sarah Gleason, who was b. in 1757 [1756], and d. June 19, 1795; the children by this marriage were:
