per Melvina notes: Notes for Alvin Elwood Robinson: Information from Charles L. Robinson, great nephew to Alvin: Alvin Elwood Robinson was born May 14, 1843, in New York. With his family, he removed to Iowa in 1852. At age 19, he enlisted August 23, 1863, Co. K., 14th Iowa Infantry Regiment. Transferred to Co. A Residuary Battalion 14th Iowa Infantry Regiment Nov. 15, 1864. Discharged August 8, 1865, Davenport, IA. He always said that he had been a pallbearer for President Lincoln, and it may be true since the 14th Iowa Infantry was stationed at Springfield, Illinois at the time of the funeral. In 1869 he married Martha Cheney. 1885 NEBRASKA STATE CENSUS on ancestry.com Elk Creek Twp., Custer Co., Nebraska Alve (Alvin) E. Robinson, ae 40, b. NY Manther (Martha) Robinson, ae 47, b. [edit] Shotgun AccidentBEAVER CITY TIMES (Nebraska) Friday, 16, March 1906 A. E. Robinson, an old gentleman and an old soldier, met with a most serious accident on Wednesday, by which he lost the thumb of his right hand and in fact it is possible that the hand may have to be amputated at the wrist. The accident was the old one of pulling a loaded shotgun from a wagon by the muzzle. In this instance part of the charge entered the side as well as tearing the hand in the horrible manner above described. Mr. Robinson, who lives near Hollinger, was at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. Coffelt, near Precept, when the accident occurred. Dr. Cameron went posthaste, and has some assurance that he may save the hand for future usefulness. [edit] ROBINSON/COFFELT FAMILY MEMOIRS OF THE SHOTGUN ACCIDENT"Alvin and his son-in-law, Frank Coffelt, were out in the fields doing the haying. Alvin was holding a shot gun with his thumb over the end of the gun as they rode in the wagon; as they rode over some rough ground the gun accidently went off, blowing off the end of his thumb. Alvin told Frank they must go in haste to the doctor, because if he bled to death before they got there, everybody would certainly say that Frank had shot his father-in-law. Needless to say, Frank hurried to the doctor where the stub was bandaged. However, they were told to go back and find the pieces of thumb that was blown off and keep it warm until the stub healed or it would not heal. The two went back and searched until they found it. They took the piece of thumb home and kept it warm until Alvin's stub healed. Alvin always wore a black glove to cover his mutilated hand. During his later years, Alvin resided alone in a rented house at Morrill where he enjoyed mingling with the townspeople. Occasionally he resided with Mary's (Varner-Casteel) son, Lewis A. Casteel, unless moods of "childishness and a wandering mind" caused him to live alone again. Eventually his diminishing mental abilities made it necessary for Alvin to be admitted to the Veteran's Home where he would be cared for.
