He is seen on the 1870 census, age 3, with parents, Perry, Dallas Twp., Dallas Co., Ia.(p 549, fam #31/31) and on the 1880 census, Healdsburg, Mendocino Twp., Sonoma Co. Calif., age 13, with parents. (ED 128, p 190C, fam #169/169) On the 1900 census, San Diego, San Diego Co., Calif., Alva A., 34, is a "transferman." Wife Alice C., is caring for their three children.On the 1900 census, she declares her father was born in Nova Scotia, and her mother in England. Also in the home is niece Georgia Long, 4, b. Calif, father b. Mich., mother b. Nev. Assume this is Alice's sister's child.(ED 196, p 7, fam #160/229 ) Continuing in San Diego in 1910, Alva, 42, is now an Expressman for a lumber company. Alice E., 40, declares they have been married 20 years and she has born 3 children, all alive at this time, and in the home. Their address is given as 2031 "D" Street. (ED 159, p 236, fa m #196/236) In his father's obituary, 1914, he is of San Diego. In 1920 they continue in San Diego. Alva, 52, is now manager of a transfer company. Alice 49, continues to care for family, now grown by presence of daughter-in-law Thelma , wife of Arthur, and granddaughter Betty. Their address is given as 358 21st St. (ED 336 , p 8B, fam #186/252) On the California Death Records, we find that Alice was b. 28 Oct 1870 and her maiden name was Thomas.
