Alta A. (Dingman) Hines was born on 3 December 1863 to William and Nancy Dingman in New York. She moved with her family to Iowa and later to South Dakota. In 1883, she married Elijah E. Hines. According to the 1910 U S Federal Census, they had 10 children of which 7 were still living. Alta died on 5 March 1938 in Madison, Lake County, South Dakota. Her husband, Elijah, preceded her in death.
