Information on Alice Moore

Alice Moore was born ca 1769/70 per her ages on the 1850 census (80) and 1860 census (90). She was presumably born in Burke (now Buncombe) County, North Carolina. She was mentioned in the 1903 letter as a daughter of old William H. Moore: "Alice, who married John Penland".

Her husband John Penland was a brother to the other Penlands who married into this family, as stated in the 1903 letter. John was born ca 1764/65 in Pennsylvania (both per 1850 census). I don't know who his parents are.

I didn't find John Penland on the 1790 census, but it does seem he and Alice were probably already married prior to then. In 1790 there was Robert, George and William Penland listed in Burke Co., NC. George had a large household including 3 males over 16. William had 5 males over 16. One of them could be John, though I don't know which of them (if either) is John's father.

I wasn't able to find John on the 1800 census either. George Penland (bef 1755) was in Buncombe, the only one of that surname listed there. He had an older male aged 26-44 (1755/74) with him. That could be John. In Burke in 1800 there was James Penland (1755/74), Robert (bef 1755) and William Penland (bef 1755). William also had a male aged 26-44 at home with him, which could be John, and two females in that age group, one of whom could be Alice Moore Penland.

I did find John Penland on the 1810 census in Buncombe County.

John Penland made his Will on 3 May 1852 in Buncombe naming his heirs: his wife (not by name); sons Charles D. Penland and George Newton Penland; son William Penland; son Abraham; son John H. Penland; James Cathey's three children (relationship not stated); His sons John H. Penland and G. N. Penland were named executors. Witnesses were Charles Moore (his brother-in-law) and G. W. Candler (his nephew). The Will can be found online at the Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society website.

Alice Moore Penland was still alive as of the 1860 census, aged 90. She was in Buncombe as head of household. A grandson and his wife were living with her. **
