69 Eles Eddy (John, Samuel, William), b. May 3, 1659; m. Mar. 16, 1682, as his seoond wife, Benjamin Hatch (Falmouth V.R., Vol. I, p. 122). He was b. 1655; son of Jonathan and Sarah (Rowley) Hatch of Barnstable. Benjamin Hatch’s first wife was Mary Hamblin and his third was Experience, widow of Jabez Davis of Barnstable. Some genealogists consider Eles as a spelling for Alice, and others a short form for Elizabeth. Since John had a daughter Elizabeth, it seems more likely that Eles and Alice were the same name in this case.

[In citing Eddy Family's coverage of John Eddy: "much of which is attributable to Banks and repeats his errors."]
"Banks's conclusion that Hephzibah Doggett was already married to John Eddy by the date of the 1660 deed [p. 89: dated 3 Mar 1660, witnessed by "Hephzibah Doggett"] is probably based upon the date of birth of their daughter 'Eles' (i.e., Alice), which is given as 3 May 1659 in the family record of her husband Benjamin Hatch in the Falmouth records."
"Both the date of the deed and the date of birth of Alice (Eddy) Hatch, however, were recorded long after the fact are therefore open to question."
[Note: and since the article says John Doggett's wife was Alice Brotherton, this imply that the daughter was the witness. This, then, implies that 1659 is not Alice Eddy's birth, since the witnessing of the deed indicates that her parents not married yet on the date of the deed, almost a year later [the births of the other children are estimated].]
