Generation No. 1

ALEXANDER STUART was born in 1675 possibly Ireland-Ancestors in Scotland, and died 1712 in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. He married CATHERINE MONTGOMERY 1705 in Ireland, daughter of HUGH MONTGOMERY and JANE HAMILTON.

Notes for ALEXANDER STUART:

Born in Scotland (or possibly Ireland) Alexander emigrated to Londonderry, North Ireland in ca 1700 and married in 1705 to Catherine Montgomery b 1684 near Convoy House, County Donegal, Ireland d 2/1/1760, near Long Canes Creek, Abbeville, Abbeville Co., South Carolina, daughter of Captain Hugh Montgomery and Jane Hamilton

Notes for CATHERINE MONTGOMERY:

Following the death of Alexander Catherine remarried in 1713, County Donegal, Ireland to James Patrick Calhoun (1688 Crosh House, Newtown-Stewart, County Tyrone, Ireland- 1741 Chestnut Level, Lancaster Co,. PA.), son of Rev. Alexander Calhoun and Lady Judith Hamilton. In Ireland the Calhoun's spelled their name Colhoun (Colquhoun in some records) before moving to the states. Patrick and Catherine took their children to America, in 1733, after her Stewart children were grown. They landed either in NY or Philadelphia and moved to Lancaster Co, PA, where they settled in the Chestnut Level Area. Around 1748, sometime after Patrick's death, Catherine moved her family to some new lands that were opening up in Augusta Co, VA. In 1755 the Indians became more active and Catherine moved again to the Long Cane Creek Area of Abbeville, SC. They moved in the middle of winter and got there in Feb. 1756. The place for a while was called North & South Forks of Calhoun Creek, where it joined the little river. They were 16 miles from the nearest Indian settlement. They thought that they would be safe there. The morning of January 31, 1760 a messenger came through the little settlement and told them that the Indians were on the warpath and moving toward their area. The afternoon of January 31st and the morning of February 1st were spent loading wagons and getting provisions ready to move out. About noon on February 1st, some 200 to 250 settlers moved out for Augusta, GA a larger town about 40 miles southeast of their location. They had only gone about 10 miles when in crossing the Long Canes Creek several wagons got stuck. By the time they had all the wagons across the creek it was dark so they camped for the night. Soon after dark they were attacked by a band of Cherokee Indians. Some of the settlers escaped by horseback, some on foot, but most of them scattered finding shelter in the trees or where ever they could hide. Mostly women and children were killed as 23 settlers were left dead at the sight of the massacre. The Indians had burned all the wagons and nearly all the goods had been stolen. In the group that were killed, Catherine Montgomery Stewart Calhoun was also murdered by these Cherokee Indians. She was 76 years of age at her death. A monument to these people with her name on it was erected there in the 1790's by Catherine's son Patrick Calhoun. Two small girls ages 3 and 5 of the Calhoun's were abducted by the Indians, one eventually got back to her folks, but one was never heard from again.

Notes for ALEXANDER STUART:

Tradition has it that Alexander was twice married and had three sons John, Samuel and Joseph by his first wife. By his second wife he had William, Archibald and Alexander. The names of his wives were uncertain and he may have had several daughters. Some information has been found that Alexander may have been married to a Miss Barber who was the daughter of John Barber Junior of SC. Alexander removed his family to America in 1758 before the Revolution. Also tradition has it that his oldest son John came to America before his father, around 1745, and was a clerk of the court of Lancaster Co., PA. John was said to have changed the spelling of his surname Stuart for the better English Stewart. They resided in PA until about 1768 when they moved to York Dist., SC with the exception of John who stayed and raised his family in PA. The J. Adger Stewart chart shows that Alexander Stewart may have had several daughters and it is possible that there were more sons than are listed.

John's father and 5 brothers stayed in Chestnut Level Area of Lancaster Co. with John until they moved to York District, South Carolina.

He was granted a patent on it 3/1/1780 which means he must have been farming it. He bought in 11/1784, 96 acres from William & Ruth Caldwell. He bought at a Sheriff's sale 6/18/1785, 100 acres along Caldwell's Creek. This was land the previous owners had fled and let the taxes go unpaid. By 1795 Samuel had purchased 87 more acres. He and his family disappeared from the state by 1800. The 1790 census listed them as 1-3-5.

Notes for BENJAMIN OLIVER STRIPLIN:

DEATH AND OBITUARY NOTICES FROM THE SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE, 1867-1878 Aug. 12, 1870

"Reverand B. O. Striplin was born on the 15th of August 1788 in York District, South Carolina, and died 19th June 1870, in Cleberne Co., Alabama. He returned to his native State where he married to Miss Elizabeth R. Steward, who proceded him to the Glory World many years ago."

Taken from Randolph County, Alabama, Sixty Two Years Ago The Red Man's Home, The White Man's Eden by J.M.K. Guinn 1894-1896 "Rev. Ben Striplin, Uncle Ben, and he was usually called, and an indispensable necessity at camp meetings. Father lived at Chulafinnee in 1842, and I remember as if it were yesterday, mother took me with her to camp meetings the stand had been burned down and a new one raised on the same spot, but by some oversight the charcoal and ashes had not been properly cleaned off before services began. It was on Friday when mother and I got there. We took dinner at Dr. John Wesley Hudson's tent, and at the afternoon services we were in attendance. Services had, however, been going on for a day or two previously and were seemingly cold and discouraging; notwithstanding the warm zeal and earnest pleas of the preacher it would have passed for a Quaker meeting. The ministers and tenters could be seen gathered in groups earnestly engaged in conversation. There were all kinds of surmising as to the cause and as many theories for resuscitating Methodist zeal and activity. Mother was one of those persons who believed that "where there is a will there is generally a way," and as she used to say; "I never cross a bridge until I get to it." I heard her laughingly say to Dr. Hudson: "Just put Uncle Ben Striplin up this evening and you will see your troubles removed and Methodists go to work." Uncle Ben was put up, took his text and in a few minutes warmed up, and with a voice that echoed from hill to hill, said: "What, a thousand souls going to hell for the want of a little straw, brethern?" Suffice it to say, that evening before sun-down, which was Friday wagons with great loads of straw rolled in, and that night the alter was filled with shouting Methodists and converts, and such clapping of hands, shouting, singing, praying hallelujah, with tears trickling down the cheeks of Uncle Ben as he stood in the pulpit looking down in the altar, the writer hopes never to forget."
