Alexander Scott was baptised on 9th March 1778 at Fowlis Wester in Perthshire, son of Janet Scott, formerly Allan, and her husband John Scott, a gamekeeper. The family lived at Milton of Abercairney in the west of the parish of Fowlis Wester. He has yet to be traced after his baptism.
