    A. V. Cockrell, Dallas Native, Dies at Home
    Death Takes Kin of City's First Businesswoman

    Alexander Vardeman Cockrell, 55, of 4317 Overhill Drive, descendant of one of Dallas' earliest families, died at his home at 1:25 o'clock this (Friday) morning.

    Native of Dallas, Mr. Cockrell was born the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Cockrell, and grandson of Alexander Cockrell, who settled here in 1845 and built his first home on the site of the present Terminal Post Office Building.It was in that house that he was born.

    His grandmother, Sarah Horton Cockrell, left a woman as a young woman, was well known for her business ability and has sometimes been called Dallas' first business woman. She erected the first steam flour mill here, and in 1872 built the first bridge across the Trinity River. It was a toll bridge at the foot of Commerce Street. She also built the city's first hotel at Commerce and Broadway. At that time Dallas a village of about 1,000 people.

    Mr. Cockrell for many years was manager of the Federal glass and Paint Company here. He retired a year ago because of ill health.

    Mr. Cockrell was educated in the Dallas public schools and at Southwestern University, Georgetown. He was married in 1916 to Mary Cockrell.

    He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. T. Griffith Moore, Miss Jean Vardeman Cockrell, Miss Frances Josephine Cockrell, all of Dallas; two brothers, Monroe F. Cockrell, Chicago; Frank N. Cockrell, Dallas; two sisters, Mrs. Davis Spangler, Dallas; Mrs. Kemp S. Dargan, Houston.

    Estate of A. V. Cockrell Estimated at $50,000

    An estate, estimated for probate purposes at $50,000, was left by Alexander Vardeman Cockrell, member of an early Dallas family, who died Feb. 19.

    In a will filed for probate on Wednesday Mr. Cockrell ordered the entire estate given to his wife, Mary C. Cockrell, who also was named executor. The estate consists of real estate, stocks and bonds, notes and other personal property, the probate application indicated.
