Bert, apparently, always had a car but could never drive. --He even took lessons at one time but could never get it figured out. He would hirecollege boys/men to drive for him in the summer months and then during the school year he would have his niece, Dorothy, drive for him. She would drive him to whatever school he was at for the day and then wait at home for him to call with a request to be taken to another school or meeting. His favorite hired driver was a guy named Paul. They went everywhere together (including many trips to Colorado).

From Jeannie Murray Mullin September 2, 2002:

About the story about him not driving. I remember him having a car onetime and a young fellow to drive him to Colorado. He was evidently wanting to learn to drive and we went out in the country and he took over the wheel. Can't imagine why we went into a field where there were cows, but he was going very slowly and hit a cow. I can still see the rear end of that cow heisting up on the hood of the car. I don't believe there was any damage to either the car or the cow, but I was just a little kid. I am sure my Dad was along and took over.

From Alta Mary Murray Moses September 2, 2002:

I remember when we went to Uncle Bert's in 1939 or 1940 that we met a nephew of our dad's that was a Jones and was older than our dad was. We visited Aunt Ruth's and met all of her family. I remember Kenneth taking me to a cheese making place and I got some of the really smelly cheese,Limburger. Dad loved it but Mother hated it and made me seal it up in a tight jar to bring it home with us.

From Alta Mary Murray Moses September 13, 2002:

I had almost forgotten just how Uncle Bert looked until you sent his picture and it reminded me of how he insisted that any of our friends that came to see us girls were to greet him with Good morning Mr.Murray." We all were asked to take him out and try to teach him to drive the year that he had a young man drive him out. The worst part was that he kept watching his feet instead of the road. He did a great deal for all of us, always sending material for Mother to make us dresses and sent us so many books. I have no idea what happened to all of them as we really cherished having them. I especially remember "The 5 Little Peppers and How They Grew."

From Jeannie Murray Mullin September 8, 2002:

I remember that we received a package of yard goods every summer from Uncle Bert for Mom to make into our school dresses. He had each piecelabeled for each of us. He liked to dress me in pink and Mary in blue.He also sent lots of books and I remember a neighbor boy saying that itwas no wonder we did so well on achievement tests as our Uncle Bert sent us tests to practice on.
