Although already mentioned for having brought electricity to Vankleek Hill, Cheney, Dunning & Co. was created for something completely different. The business was founded in 1883 beside the tarn on Mill Street and by 1885 Malcom McCuaig was involved in the business. It was rebuilt in 1891 after the fire which destroyed the mill and the community's first dynamo. The new company was a joint stock company called the Vankleek Hill Manufacturing Company with Malcom McCuaig as President, William McAdams as Secretary-Treasurer and Albert G. Cheney as Manager. By 1896 the new company was employing a large number of hands and manufacturing sash, doors, blinds, mouldings and house furnishings with turning and scrollwork a specialty. It had its own sawmill which produced most of its lumber and annually shipped a large amount.
On March 7th, 1918, the mill burnt to the ground. The sawmill was partially rebuilt and put back into operation only long enough to cut and sell the remaining stock of lumber.
