Her parents, William and Martha Lackey Gilmore were living on the Gilmore Plantaion, Sidney Vale,on the James River, which William and his brother, Joseph Gilmore, had inherited from their father, James Gilmore. He claimed his small portion of any estate and drifted off to the Valley of Virginia to make his own way in the world. He found his uncle Thomas Paxton, and later came to the Gilmore plantation of Sidney Vale and was employed there.
