About Gum, Adam

Military Record: fifer in 5th Regiment, Virginia Militia, War 1812 Leaves From the Gum Tree. page 471-47x

Family Susanna Lantz Married 15 Nov 1810 Highland Co., Va

Since Adam is not a common name in the Gum family, Adam was probably named for an Adam Arbogast, his uncle.

Adam was a fifer in the 5th Regiment, Virginia Militia, in the War of 1812. Adam was the only one of the eight children of Jacob and Dolly who remained in Virginia. All the others migrated to new land in Ohio, Indiana, and Missouri.

July 7, 1818, Jacob and Dorothy deeded to Adam Gum, 188 acres on the N. E. Side of Crab Apple Bottom, adjoining land of George Coles, Philip Wimer and the above mentioned Jacob Gum.Beginning at a sugar tree, line in a grant to Jacob Gum of 144 acres dated June 19, 1789. also 17 acreswhich was part of 95 acres granted to the above Jacob by patent dated March 12,1800. 79 acres which is part of a Patent granted to Jacob Gum May 31, 1790, of a total of 218 acres. (Pendleton County Deed Book Vii, p. 156)

Jacob Gum's will, written in 1820, mentions his second son, Adam. I will all that I gave him when he left me and all the land he now lives on which I have made him a title for.

1820 Pendleton County, Va census Adam 2-0-0-0-1-0---4/1-0-0-1-0-0-1 2 males under 10 1 male 26-45 4 females under 10. 1 female 26-45 The census is hard to read for the younger females it may be 4 or 1, most likely it is 4. There were other Gums on the same page.

Adam Gum and wife, Susanna, deeded land on Crab Apple Bottom to George Colaw on November 21, 1835 (Pendleton County, Va. Deed Bk. XII)

1840 Pendleton County, Virginia census - oldest male-female age) Adam Gum 0-0-0-1-1-0-0-1----0-0-2-1-0-0-0-1 (1780-90) There are many Gums as neighbors in this census

Adam's will was dated December 31, 1846, and was witnessed by I. T. Shuck; S. Zeecafoose and Henry Waggoner. Adam died soon after this, sometime in 1847. The will did not mention his wife by name, but named the two younger sons, Peter 6 and Adam 6; and the three youngest daughters, Nelly 6, Susannah 6, and Eliza 6. Peter Gum was named as administrator of the will. Susanna was living in 1850, but we do not know when she died.

According to the Biography, they were the parents of eleven children. In Morton's 'History of Highland County',he did not know where to place Adam, so he listed him separately, even though he had listed Adam who married Susanna Lantz as a child og Jacob Gum. In his chart, he listed nine children. He listed Mary, who married John Gum, as a child, and that is incorrect. He omitted three children. In the family list, the oldest three children stated they were 37 in 1850 census, so it can be presumed that they stated their age incorrectly
