Facts and Events
Adam Driver moved to Erie County, Ohio in 1835 with his parents. In 1847 he moved to Allen County, Indiana where he purchased 80 acres of wild land. He sold this and returned to Ohio. Two years later he and his brother William purchased 200 acres of woodland in Allen County and he really became a pioneer. He is listed twice on the 1850 census - in both Ohio and Indiana. Scipio Township is a rural township. It is located in the northeastern corner of Allen County, with Newville Township, in Dekalb County, Indiana to the north, and the Ohio counties of Paulding and Defiance sharing its eastern boundary. From Upper Maumee River Valley, 1889 Allen County, Indiana, Springfield Township Adam Driver, an old settler of Allen County, was born in Maryland May 2, 1819, son of Wesley and Ruth (Barns) Driver. At sixteen years of age he came to Ohio and settled in Erie County where his father bought seventy-four acres of timber land. Here he got a foretaste of a pioneer's life. After twenty one years of age he worked out (means hired out as a farm hand) until 1847, when he had accumulated enough with which he came to Allen County and bought eighty acres of wild lands. In a short time he sold this and returned to Ohio, but two years later (*) he came in company with his brother and bought 240 acres of wood land in partnership. Here he began a real pioneer life. April 9, 1854, he was united in marriage with Almenia S. Bartholomew, who was born in 1834. The union was blessed with three children: Harriet, Adelia and John S. Driver. He has been a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal church for thirty five years. He now (1889) owns 160 acres of well improved land and is one of the substantial citizens of this township (Springfield). 1850 Erie Co., OH census lists him as a live-in farm laborer on the farm of Richard Ruggles.
