Stapp, Achilles - born 12/22/1755 in Orange County, Virginia, where entered service 1776 in Virginia company; granted Pension 1832 in Scott County, Virginia, as Achilles Slapp; there died 9/4/1849/ married 12/1813 Ann, Scott County, Virginia ; widow granted Pension there in 1853 as Ann Stapp; resided there in 1853 at age 72; widow granted Bounty Land Warrant #34909 there in 1855 age 80; query letter in file in 1900 from descendant mary Figg (Mrs. Charles W.) Sheen, Louisville, Kentucky. F-W599, R2272.

- Marriage records show that Achilles married his 2nd wife Anna Millbanks in Scott County, Kentucky, not Virginia as stated.

    The declaration of Achilles Slapp in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress 7th of June 1832. On this 20th day of August 1832 Achilles Slapp personally appeared before the Justices of the County Court of Scott County a resident of said County and State of Kentucky aged 77 years the 22nd December 1832 being 1st duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress of the 7th of June 1832.

    That during the Revolutionary war in the State of Virginia while resident of Orange County where he was born on the 2nd day of March 1776 he enlisted as a regular soldier for 2 years under Captain Joseph Spencer of said County & served till 2nd day of March 1778 making the 2 years & was honorably discharged General Woodford signed the discharge – the discharge is lost. He was in the Battle at Gunis Island [Gwynn Island, July 8-10, 1776] in Virginia in driving Governor Dunmore off, next Battle was Brandywine [September 11, 1777], where he fired 22 [?]2 rounds at the enemy, also was at the Battle of German town [Germantown, October 4, 1777] & some other skirmishes not worth retelling. Besides which he served for militia tours – but does not conceive it important to detail them. His 1st tour was under Captain Toliver Craig, 2nd tour under Captain Benjamin Johnson, 3rd under Captain Robert Miller, 4th under Captain May Burton all of Orange County Virginia – 2 months each.
    He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and he declares that his name is not on the pension Roll of the Agency of any State.

    [f p. 6: On April 6, 1853 in Scott County Kentucky, Ann Stapp, 72, filed for a widow's pension as the widow of Achilles Stapp, a revolutionary war pensioner at the rate of $80 per annum for his service in that war; that she married him in December 1813 in Scott County Kentucky; that they were married by James Suggett a Baptist clergyman; that the clerks office was destroyed by fire in 1837; that she has no family record of her marriage; that her husband died in Scott County Kentucky September 4, 1849.
