    SERVICE:Duty at Pulaski, Tenn., and Athens, Ala., District of North Alabama, till September, 1864. Action at Athens with Forest September 23-24 (most of Regiment captured). Sulphur Branch Trestle September 25 (Detachment). Duty at Pulaski, Tenn., till January, 1865. Guard duty on Nashville & Northwestern Railroad and in Middle Tennessee till April, 1866.     Because of his previous Military experience, Abner was soon promoted to the rank of Captain and managed to get John B. transferred to his unit as a wagon master. Both were captured, within a day of each other at Sulpher Branch Trestle, Alabama and interned at Cahaba, Alabama.

    Jerusha married neighbor Clark Smith (2nd marriage for both) on 12 Sep 1850.

    1860 Fed Census showed that Jerusha Smith was a resident of Hittle Twp, Tazewell Co, IL with her parents.
    Jerusha remarried Abner W Forbes (her 3rd marriage) on 15 Aug 1861 at Bloomington, McLean Co, IL.

    Son John Burwell Forbes wed Nancy A Walker, a schoolteacher, 7 Feb 1867, at Lexington, McLean Co, IL.
    1870 Fed Census, Jerusha living in McLean Co, IL.

    On 1 Sep 1876, Atlanta "Argus" newspaper stated that Jerusha, and her husband, was visiting her father, John, in Sterling, KS where he was very ill.

    Jerusha Weltha died 3 Feb 1881 in Tazewell Co, IL, two months shy of her 58th birthday.

  8. Many of the men captured here and imprisoned at Cahaba would later perish in the explosion of the Sultana steamship on the Mississippi River in April, 1865. Even without the addition of these eventual losses, the battle of Sulphur Trestle remains the bloodiest battle of the war fought on Alabama soil.
