Overview

There were relatively few "Kendall's" who settled in Old Augusta. Person:Wofendall Kendall (1), who is probably related to Samuel Kendall and Elizabeth Woffendale, applied for a Revolutionary War pension in 1832, as shown by an entry in Source:Chalkley's Chronicles. His sister, Person:Frances Kendall (5) married a Thomas Berry, and settled in the northern portions of the Shenandoah River Valley, at the community of "the Briars". This line of Kendall's traces descent from a Thomas Kendall=Martha Gough/Goff. Thomas initially settled in Maryland as an indentured servant, but later settled in Kings County, VA.

The Peter Kendall in Chalkley's Chronicles, was apprenticed in 1794 to William Throckmorton, to study the "art and mystery" of the printers trade. He may also be descended from Thomas and Martha, but direct evidence for this is absent.

Working notes from Scott kendall, 31 July 2013, personal communication to Q

Woffendale Kendall died about October 1795 in King George County. After his death the family moved to Shenandoah County. Woffendale was the father of James 1760-1823. James had a son Woffendale 1789-1846. Could the grandson have applied for his grandfather's pension?

Woffendale, the younger, was in Shenandoah until 1829 per tax lists. The same Woffendale (and wife Rachel) show up in Morgan County, Illinois. He is listed in the 1839 tax list for Morgan County, IL. He dies around 1846 and his wife Rachel is executrix. She later remarries a Cline. I have not check VA tax list from 1830-1840 for Woffendale.

The Peter Kendall who went to Fleming County, KY was a farmer. He may be the same Peter Kendall that was in Nodaway County, VA in the early 1800s. The Peter who died in Henry County, TN was a hat maker (I have to double check), farmer and politician. Woffendale 1789 had a younger brother Peter but he was born 1796.
