Person:William Huston (4) settled on Catfish Creek in what is now the town of Washington, on the border of South Strabrane and North Franklin townships.
Person:James Huston (4) settled near by, and is known to have come to the area from Cumberland County.

Note 1

From Deb. May 26, 2011 by personal communication to Q 10:58, 28 May 2011 (EDT).

[The children of] William "Catfish" Huston...were Dickson...married to Margaret (Peggy) Glass, James (who is NOT the James who purchased the land so close to William), Hamilton who married Mary Miller, Ann (who had Mordecai Hoge son of John Hoge) married to a ? Prall), Mary (Polly) who married Archibald Kerr, Jane who married John Smith, and Peggy who was married to a Paxton....He was born in IRE and married in IRE prior to coming to the states.

Dickson and James went to Mercer Co., PA, prior to 1799. They both witnessed some property deal which I have a copy of. James purchased land in 1805 and Dickson passed away in 1812 (I have his will info]. It appears that James was never married because in every census he is living alone and the head of the household. Hamilton and the girls pretty much stayed in/around Washington Co., PA. I can't find Hamilton in the 1810 census but a Mary in Straban/e so I am thinking that this is is wife and he died.

...About the James Huston who had land near William. [He]...is not Williams brother or his son James. They mention his cousin Joseph in a lot of the history stuff and since that is the case why wouldn't they ever mention a brother with land close to him? I don't know for sure if my James was in the war because the land he purchased in Mercer Co., was not designated as a parcel for Rev war men. The rest of the parcels clearly state what they were in the war, private, etc.

There are two James that apply for a pension in Washington Co., and I don't believe that is my James either. He lived in Mercer Co., why would he apply in Washington Co? There were many James in Washington Co which does make this all so confusing. Plus see what I said about the land purchase above.

...[A]ll the families keep using the same names over and over. William "Catfish" Huston does not use many of the names listed as heads of the family in Washington Co., Cumberland Co., etc. They never named their children Daniel (who is definitely from Lancaster), Paul, Robert, Christopher, Isaac, etc. I truly believe that if he was related to these people his kids would share these names.

...[T]he key to William's relatives will have something to do with his cousin Joseph. There was a Joseph in the 1790 census and I can't remember at the moment were it was but it definitely was not one of the places everyone thinks William is from. I guess that doesn't mean much but it could. I agree that the Hoge's lived in Cumberland and lived near William that can't be disputed. Plus John had a child with his daughter Ann and he was an executor in Wm's will.

There are so many Williams and James in Washington Co. that I think everyone is thinking they come down through my William but I really don't think it is true. The names in their families trees just don't even come close.
