The Following Table summarizes articles by Emory Hamilton related to attacks by Native Americans in southwest Virginia. Hamilton referred to these events as "atrocities", and indeed the consequences were tragic events. However, these articles primarily tell the stories of the European settlers in the area, and the "atrocities" were not confined to one side or the other. We just don't have very good written records of the comparable tragedies that were experienced by the Native Americans.
Hamilton's articles are still under copyright. However, they have been widely presented on the web, and a recent publication gathered many of Hamilton's articles together in one book. (.....Need reference, need discussion of Rhonda Robertson's work in this area). The data in this table is drawn from Robertson's publications on the web stored in the Russell County archives at Rootsweb. These links are presented here as a handy reference to those articles. As this project goes along we will fill in the table with information about the date of the events described, their location, persons involved, and primary sources.
It should also be realized that while Hamilton identified a great many of these events, not all of his articles are covered here. Nor are all events of this nature that occurred in southwest Virginia, captured by Hamilton's articles. As we find additional information, we will add to this core of work by Hamilton.
