There are folks who will say that John Cowan was born in Rockbridge County. They usually cite a birth record at Tinkling Springs. There is a "John Cowan" listed there, but a) 1748 DOB, b) mother shown as Hanna. Father not shown. A 1768 DOB might be closer to the truth, but I believe he came of age (based on court records in Russell/Washington County) about 1784---If born in 1768 he'd have been only 16. Suppose its possible, and the coming of age date might be a couple of years later. In anycase, what is your source for this DOB? Q 16:10, 9 February 2010 (EST)

Hi Bill, the source was a Familysearch submission that appeared to be fairly well documented, but as with all Familysearch submissions, it probably should be taken with a grain of salt... I was in the process of adding some Knox County records to add some documentation to their pages, should be done by the weekend. Still a work in progress, as with many of the Virginia/Tennessee lines we're working on:)

Other children

I've removed the Samuel, Nathaniel, and James Cowan from this childlist, based on YDNA evidence for a descendant of James. The YDNA for this line is not the same as that for Samuel Cowan who married Ann Walker. That Samuel is in the YDNA. Seven Brothers Cowan Group. Samuel, Nathaniel, and James are placed in the YDNA. Knoxville Merchant Cowan Group.
