Family talk:Samuel Black and Rosanna Wright (1)

Questions on the family of Samuel and Rosanna (Wright) Black [1 March 2015]

Rosanna Wright does not fit well into the family of William and Margaret Wright of Augusta County VA. You show 11 children for William and Margaret Wright citing my analysis of the family, but adding Rosanna. The first child listed is Mary born ca 1733. The last child listed in Rosannah, b ca 1787. That is a span of 44 years. So William Wright had to have had more than one wife since Rosanna could not have had the same mother as Mary. All we know with certainty about the wife of William is that she was named Margaret. This comes from the land records of Augusta County. We are not certain that William was married to Margaret Malchom even though Margaret Rite with a son William Rite in named in the 1745 will of John Malckom recorded in Augusta Co. A descendant of William Wright, David Caldwell, has claimed that tradition passed down in his line is gthat William was married to Margaret Black. But David Caldwell's line went from William (1707-1776) of Augusta County, through William, Jr. to William (III), who did marry Margaret "Peggy" Black, daughter of Samuel and Rosannah (Wright) Black. This Margaret "Peggy" Black is buried in Fall Creek Cemetery, Highland County, OH. According to her gravestone she died 16 Apr 1870, aged 81 years, 5 (or 6) months, 20 days. CNB = 26 Sep 1788. The Highland County death records say that this Margaret Wright was the daughter of Samuel and Rose Black. The gravestone for a lady named who is usually identified as this Rosannah Black in Vermillion County, IL, says she was born 4 Apr 1765; and died 13 Sep 1837 (photo on find-a-grave).

How do we know that the surety Alexander Wright was Rosannah's brother? Rosannah simply does not fit well into the family tree of William and Margaret Wright of Augusta County, Virginia. She is too young to be the daughter of William and Margaret, and too old to have been a granddaughter. Only the eldest surviving son of William and Margaret, Samuel, had children born prior to 1770. Samuel distributed his property to his living children in 1808-1810 (Adams County, Ohio, land records). Samuel and Rosannah Black did not receive any of the property.
