  1. Ralph Chapman's will dated 28 Nov 1671 indicates that Sarah had married William Norcutt by then. It is unlikely that Sarah was William's only wife. William's will (Genealogical Advertiser p. 3:109) refers to his widow as the "beloved wife I now have" which suggests he did have a prior wife. However, it does appear there were no children prior to Sarah Chapman despite the fact that she was only 17 when son William was born 1662. A deed dated 25 Mar 1695 (MD, p. 49:48) by son eldest William Norcutt to brother Ralph Norcutt sells half the farm that his Grandfather Ralph Chapman gave to "his son in law William Norcutt and Sarah his wife my father and mother and to their Heirs to wit their Eldest surviving son". Ralph Chapman's will MD, p. 19:132) did not give this to all the Heirs, but "by the heires is ment, the eldest son of the said William and Sarah Surviveing", which clearly seems to indicate that the seller of this parcel, William, b. 1662, is Sarah's child.

Given that, the extreme range of children, from 1662 to 1691, one might even speculate that Sarah Chapman was William's first wife, and the Sarah mentioned in the will was a second wife, but was not Sarah Chapman. William's children are found in two groups in the Marshfield records, and this may be a reflection of a new wife, placing the likely time for such a 2nd marriage to be between 1680 and 1683, if there was one. The fact that son William sold his grandfather's land so soon, 1695, indicates Sarah Chapman had died by then, and that would certainly be true if she had predeceased her husband.
