One of the witnesses to the marriage, Alfred Hatherley, was Jane's brother-in-law, being married to her sister Celia. The other witness, William Peter Henry White, was probably not connected to the family; he described himself in the 1851 census as "Parish Clerk - Superintendent of Christian Knowledge Locl. Depôt" (Class HO107, Piece 1879, Folio 542, Page 9: 14 Frankfort Street, Plymouth (St Andrew), Devon).
