Childhood

Jane Drake was baptised on 14th March 1824 at Bere Ferrers in Devon. She was the daughter of Mary Drake, formerly Harris, and her husband John Drake, a sexton and husbandman. Jane was the fifth of seven children. The family lived at 'Monkeys Castle', which was an isolated cottage on the road between Bere Ferrers and Bere Alston. Jane's mother, Mary, died in 1832 when Jane was only eight years old. Her father was left with the children to look after, the youngest of whom was only three. He does not appear to have remarried.

At the time of the 1841 census, Jane appears to have been working as a servant in Stonehouse, near Plymouth, whilst her father and siblings were still at Bere Ferrers.

Adulthood

Jane married a shipwright named William Richard Harry from Saltash in Cornwall. They were married at St Andrew's Church in Plymouth, Devon on 17th November 1850. She was 26, whilst he was 23. Shortly after their marriage, early in 1851, Jane had her first daughter, Mary Ann, born back at Bere Ferrers. Jane and her daughter appear in the 1851 census living with Jane's father at Monkeys Castle. William was lodging in Southampton at the time. Sadly baby Mary Ann died aged one, and was buried at Bere Ferrers.

The family then moved to Portsmouth, some 150 miles away from the Plymouth and Bere Ferrers area, where their next daughter, also Mary Ann, was born in 1853. Presumably they were following William's work, moving between different ship building areas.

They returned to Bere Ferrers by 1855 when their daughter Amelia Jane was born. They then moved to Dartmouth in Devon where their daughter Louisa Kate was born in 1857. They then settled in Plymouth, having five more children there, although the youngest two both died young, leaving them with six surviving children who lived to adulthood.

In each census from 1861 to 1881 the family was living at Claremont Street or Claremont Place in Plymouth, which was the same street William and Jane had lived in at the time of their marriage. William continued working as a shipwright for the rest of his life, but in 1871 he was described as "out of employ".

Jane appears to have become a grandmother in 1872, aged 47, when her daughter Mary Ann had her first baby. The 1881 census finds the family living at 3 Claremont Place.

William died in 1884, aged 57. After his death Jane's daughter Mary Ann and her family came to live with Jane at 3 Claremont Place. Whilst living with her they had two children baptised in 1885 and 1886. They then moved away to Devonport between 1886 and 1888.

The 1891 census finds Jane living alone at 3 Claremont Place, where she had four rooms. She was working as a charwoman.

Jane died in 1894, aged about 70. She had lived to see seventeen grandchildren, although she had also seen four of them die young.
