  1. Torrey lists the marriage ca 1679 to Elizabeth Williams, b. 1660. Other secondary sources seem to identify Elizabeth as, alternately, the daughter of Rev. Samuel Williams of Roxbury (e.g., Source:Williams, Stephen W. Genealogy and History of the Family of Williams in America : More Particularly of the Descendants of Robert Williams of Roxbury, p. 34; NEHGR, Vol. 10, p. 154; Source:Wheeler, Richard Anson. History of the Town of Stonington, County of New London, Connecticut, from Its First Settlement in 1649 to 1900, p. 662), or Ebenezer Williams of Taunton (e.g., Source:Crane, Ellery B. Historic Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester County, Massachusetts, Vol. 1, p. 131; Source:Paine, Albert Prescott. History of Samuel Paine, Jr., A. D. 1778-1861, and His Wife Pamela Chase Paine, 1780-1856, of Randolph, Vt., and Their, p. 14 (here, image 14); Source:Paine, H. D. Paine Family Records, p. 22). No real evidence to support either case has been found. The sources naming Ebenezer, in particular, seem nothing but copied assertions, and no such Elizabeth has even been found. It would seem that the probate of Samuel Williams who died in 1698 could possibly provide some conclusive evidence, but has not been located yet (the Stephen W. Williams book cited above has an short quote from the will regarding the son Ebenezer, so presumably was informed by its contents). The basis for estimating the marriage around 1679 has not been discovered either, as the only children of Stephen Paine were born to his second wife.
