Genealogy Report and Notes on Samuel Steele and 1)Margaret Fulton, 2) Sarah Campbell:
1. SAMUEL1 STEELE was born 1709 in Ireland1, and died 30 Jan 1790 in Waynesboro, Augusta County, Virginia1. He married (1) MARGARET FULTON WFT Est. 1730-1735. She was born Abt. 1713 in of Augusta County, Virginia, and died Bef. 1753. He married (2) SARAH CAMPBELL WFT Est. 1747-1753, daughter of JAMES CAMPBELL and MARGARET ???. She was born 1714, and died 1810. Notes for SAMUEL STEELE: WARNING! There is considerable doubt that this Richard Steele was the father of this Samuel Steele of Augusta County, Virginia based upon the following account. More research may be necessary to conclusively prove the parentage of Samuel:
Reprinted with Ernest Thompson's permission: I am a descendent of Samuel Steele and Margaret Fulton. I regret to tell all that there is almost no possibility that the very famous Sir Richard Steele, author and playwright, and his wife Mary Scurlock were the parents of our Samuel Steele. The life of Sir Richard is extensively documented in at least three biographies (e.g., Life of Richard Steele by Aitken) and there is no record indicating he had a son either by Mary or anyone else including his first wife Margaret Stretch. Sir R. and Mary did have a child in 1709, but it was a daughter named Elizabeth. The theory that the Steeles of Steele's Tavern in Augusta Co. were descendents of Sir Richard has been around for 40 -50 years and seems to have a life of its own. Much as we might like to think we are descendents of Sir Richard (I know I would) we will have to look elsewhere for the origins of the Steeles of Augusta Co.

The road and tavern were west of the big spring in the field at that time. It is said, people could step from the stagecoach onto the steps of the tavern porch. It was here that David and Mary (Polly) Moore Steele, daughter of Captain David Moore, were living when the Marquis de Chastilleax and his companions stopped in 1782 to find refreshments. The Marquis’ book "Travels in North America" details the stop on pages 243-244."

I was looking at your Ramsey family at your web site http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsumner/ramsey.htm You list Sarah Fulton Ramsey as the daughter to William & Diana Ramsey. Have you looked at where Sarah got her middle name, Fulton? Could it be from Martha Fulton, mother to Mary Steele wife of Andrew Ramsey b abt 1749.

I'm not sure if I sent you the information about the Ramsey DNA testing currently underway but take a look at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ramsey/indexDNA.html If your not already participating I would like encourage you to have a Ramsey male submit a DNA sample to narrow the search. As an added point of interest I just came across Philander Ramsey in my line born in the 1840s. I apologize if I can't remember our correspondence but I've reached that age.
Notes for ANDREW RAMSEY: Andrew Ramsey that married Mary Steele is not a proven child of John Ramsey, but it is a possibility that several researchers have suggested. More research is necessary to conclusively prove a relationship. To this researcher, there appears to be no other Andrew Ramsey in the Augusta County, VA area that seems to fit date-wise as the husbane of Mary Steele, based upon over 20 years of research into Augusta County, VA families.
