  3.   Several secondary sources indicate that the Samuel Abbott of Framingham is a son of this couple, but no evidence is given nor has been found. [No birth record found, and the father's probate file (Middlesex Case 53) in 1771 doesn't ever list all the heirs (Ephraim is administrator, only Abraham and Abijah are young enough to require a guardian, 3 payments to a Samuel Abbott are mentioned (one for principal & interest from 1762 to 1773), but no relationship given). No deed has been found connecting the two.] So while a son Samuel would be expected, there is no obvious gap for his birth, and inconsistencies in presentations by the various sources raise some doubts.

This alleged son Samuel is married [date unknown, first child bp. 1774], to Martha Jennings b. 1748, lived in Framingham and d. small pox in 1791, leaving 4 children (Josiah, Betsey (Abbott) Hastings, Sally and Nabby) and a widow Martha. Presumably older than his wife, but born at least by say 1752.

Source:Barry, William. History of Framingham, Massachusetts, p. 165, shows him as son of Samuel Jr. and wife Abigail of Sudbury, born no date given, but between Sarah '45 and Rebecca '49. The problem is that Rebecca's birth is recorded in 1747/48, which suggests Barry's placement is a guess, and even if qualitatively correct, it is quantitatively wrong based on using incorrect information for Rebecca.

Source:Abbot, Abiel. Genealogical Register of the Descendants of George Abbot, of Andover, p. 157, gives Samuel to this family with a birthdate of 27 Sep 1743. No such record is found [expected to be on p. 113, or in the copy on 21 but not there], and this is less than a year after Jason's recorded birth, and 17 months before Sarah's recorded birth, so a tight fit, at best. This is presumably the source for books by Cutter and Crane that give the same date. Birthdates can, of course, be calculated from age at death, without providing any evidence of parentage, but the basis for this birthdate is unknown.

Source:Van Nattan, Laurence J. History of the Town of Rindge, New Hampshire from the Date of the Rowley Canada or Massachusetts Charter to the Present Time,, p. 423 mentions the connection in providing background for the Abbott family there, but gives no birthdate for Samuel, so presumably it merely relied on other sources. Being at least a generation removed in its area of study, it would be expected to have no particular insights on its own.
