  1.   All 12 of the children's births named their mother as Alice, and her death record is found in 1717-18. There is no marriage record for Nathaniel until he marries, after this death, in 1721, to Sarah Brown. However, VRs shows three baptisms from 1707-1711 apparently naming the mother as Eleanor. The birth records for the same children say Alice, children born before these say Alice, and children born after say Alice, meaning these baptisms appear to be a clerical error. However, many secondary sources have been fooled into giving Nathaniel a first wife Eleanor, and a second wife Alice.
  2.   Some secondary sources say Alice is Alice Whitney, d/o Joshua. This is probably caused by a reference in Bond's History of Watertown to daughter Woods in Joshua Whitney's 1713 will. That this conclusion is erroneous is shown by the very same will, which says he has five living daughters, whom he explicitly names (Mary Peirce, Elenor Shepard, Sarah Juell, Martha Williams, and Elisabeth Farnworth), i.e., no daughter Alice, even though Nathaniel's wife Alice was alive when the will was written in 1713. Further, the will mentions his eldest daughter, wife of Thomas Woods (i.e., Hannah), which shows the reference does not refer to Nathaniel's wife.
